Perinatal Mental Health
Perinatal Wellness: Navigating the Journey with Support and Understanding
Perinatal Mental Health refers to the emotional and psychological well-being of individuals during pregnancy through the first year following the birth of a child. That period acknowledges the unique challenges and the range of complex emotions that people face during this transformative time. I often hear “I just don’t feel like myself,” or “I’m not enjoying parenthood like I thought I would.” While those types of statements can be a normal part of your experience, they can also signify underlying issues that warrant attention.
Many people experience mood changes and feel overwhelmed trying to conceive, during pregnancy, and/or after the birth of a child. When these changes impact the quality of your day to day, do not resolve on their own, and/or worsen in severity, you could be experiencing a Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorder. Symptoms of Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders, also known as PMADs, can appear any time during that timeframe, and not only for the birthing parent, but also for partners. 1 in 5 women and 1 in 10 dads/partners experience postpartum depression.
Common Types of PMADs Include:
Pregnancy or Postpartum Depression
Pregnancy or Postpartum Anxiety
Pregnancy or Postpartum OCD
Postpartum PTSD
Postpartum Psychosis
Bipolar Mood Disorders
Key Areas of Focus May Include:
